One of my favorite Sci-Fi TV shows has been Babylon 5. For the longest time, several friends of mine in my industry tried to get me to watch it. They knew I was a big TV Sci-Fi fan (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Dr. Who, Blake’s 7…). They told me I should watch Babylon 5 – that I’d love it, but.. I needed to watch it in order.
They were right. The show was absolutely awesome. The depth of the writing, the depth of the characters was brilliant. It kicks any Star Trek in the head, and that’s some accomplishment. However, B5 set out to have a 5 year story, and that’s what they did. 5 seasons, no more. There were a few TV movies here andthere, and there was an aborted spinoff (Crusade). However, that was it. The show was done, especially after an attempt to launch a new series in 2002 on Sci-Fi channel failed.

At least that’s what I thought before today. I read this news story about a possible return of the show in some format. Movie or TV – who knows? This is great news. I’ve always felt the JMS’ writing for B5 was brilliant – the fact that his stories and characters were so intertwined. He’d do all kinds of things that you thought were nothing, but when you watched a second time, you just couldn’t believe how much he was giving away in plain sight storywise, but you didn’t see it.
I really would love there to be more of this show. I’d even sign up for a pay cable channel (HBO, Showtime) if that was the only way to get it!
Babylon 5 – Doctor Who – Blake’s 7 (maybe). Three of my favorite Sci-Fi shows coming back? I love it. :)

Small piece of bad news. Citing creative differences, Paul Darrow has parted company with B7 Productions. I believe he made the correct decision, given what I know about the direction the company intended to take the project in.
