Low Carbs are annoying
Evertyhing nowadays is low carb this and low carb that. Hell, even at the Ballpark, they have a low carb “menu”. This country is nuts. It’s just the latest fad – it will go away in 6 months, no one will care anymore. We’ve had bread in our diet forever, and the last what 10 years or something it’s become evil, and something to eliminate? I don’t think so. Low Carb and Atkins type diets are just excuses to overeat one portion of one’s food intake. Moderation is the key. I know I’m not the greatest example of diet preaching, but I do know what needs to be done, I just have a hard time doing it. Carbs are fine – you need to work out the portions.
I mean we’ve all gone to hell when the #1 soft drink maker in the world introduces a “Low Carb Cola”. Coca-Cola is introducing a new drink this summer called “C2”. It’s just insane. Drink a friggin Diet Coke. It’s the same thing. Sigh.
Next thing you’ll know there will be low-carb edible underwear. It’s just insane. In honor of this announcement, I’m going to eat something with high carbs. In a year or so, we’re going to find out that this “low carb” fiasco is the wrong way of doing things. Remember – at one point, smoking cigarettes was considered to be healthy. I hate this low carb fad stuff. GO AWAY!
Here’s a news story about this:
ATLANTA – Coke is launching a mid-calorie cola that promises half the sugar, carbohydrates and calories of its regular version.
The Atlanta-based company said Monday that Coca-Cola C2 will debut first in Japan and then the United States this summer.
The company has been researching the idea for a year.
There will be subtle packaging differences to distinguish between the new drink and the company’s flagship brand.
In January, PepsiCo Inc. said it, too, was looking at the idea of selling a mid-calorie cola. At the time, spokesman Dave DeCecco said the Purchase, N.Y.-based company had applied for a patent for Pepsi LS, which some have speculated stands for low sugar. The company later named its mid-calorie cola Pepsi Edge and said it would debut in the United States this summer, roughly the same time as Coke’s version, DeCecco said Monday.

I agree with you that the whole low-carb product explosion is a little bit nuts. I am a low-carber myself and I think this is just the food and beverage industry finally “getting it” that these diets have become so popular. I don’t consume any of these low-carb products, but rather whole foods – veggies, fish, meat, fruit, nuts, etc. What’s unhealthy about that? Sure moderation is great, but there’s an addictive quality in sugar and carbs that PROMOTE overeating, not to mention the swings in blood sugar from eating very densely carby stuff with little protein or fat that can make one ravenous two hours after eating. Sure, we’ve been eating bread for a long time, but in the scheme of things, not really THAT long. Agriculture has been around for maybe 10,000 years give or take. For the 100,000+ years before that humans, and their ancestors, most likely ate what today’s hunter gatherer’s eat – wild game, fish, and a few wild fruits, veggies, shoots, and roots thrown in. Until agriculture, they did not eat significant amounts of grains as they had to be PROCESSED in order to be eaten. Our bodies are evolved to eat a hunter-gatherer’s diet and hasn’t quite caught up in the 10,000 years of agriculture to be able to handle a significantly carb (especially refined) diet without lots of problems. Most low-carb dieters who actually get past the first few weeks will tell you that they are actually eating a lot less because they are more satisfied and less hungry. I don’t think this is an excuse to overendulge, but I do think that the whole low-fat movement got a lot of people fed up because they were being told they had to go in the opposite direction (eating unpalatable crap) in order to lose weight and “be healthy.” So inevitably there came a backlash and when people saw you could actually lose weight while eating “sinful” foods like meat and fat, well, that’s all they needed to want to give the finger to the puritanical low-fatters.

Thank you for your post on low carb fad. I am so sick of hearing about low carb this and low carb that. All this about it is addictive to eat carbs and it causes you to overeat. Whatever!! I eat what I want when I want but I don’t over do it. I stop when I get full and then eat again later when I am hungry. Seems to work. If everyone stopped eating out all the darn time then it wouldn’t be so bad. When did we become a society of fast food and vending machine junkies? What happened to cooking dinner at home? Yes, I can see why America is overweight. Look at what they eat 90% of the time.
