Doctor in Distress
Doctor in Distress
This Story: Charity Song
Overall: Bonus entry, no count for overall episode numbers.
Release Date: Mar 1985
Lyrics by Ian Levine & Fiachra Trench.
Music by Fiachra Trench, Hans Zimmer (yes, THAT one), & Mel Weston.
When Doctor Who was announced as cancelled in 1985, a song was created both to raise money for a cancer charity, but also to protest the “cancellation” of Who. It was GODAWFUL. The song is atrocious, and has many people singing that really shouldn’t be.
On the music side that it turned out so bad is puzzling as it actually has Justin Lodge & Justin Hayward from the Moody Blues as well as Hans freakin’ Zimmer (yes THAT one) involved.
I bought the 45 back in the day, and still have it – got it out on 5 Apr 2023 and played it again for this, because you kind of have to if you still have this thing – it’s a badge of honor to have it.
It was also brought up and sung by Sandi Toksvig during QI in 2022’s Red Nose Day too. It lives! #DoctorInDistress
Note
- The second tweet was about this special, but the account that posted it has since become suspended, so I can’t show the full context, but the old text does still appear below the error message.
