- The episode “Blink” is referenced.
- ‘DeTamble’s’, the name of the restaurant in the hotel, is a reference to The Time Traveler’s Wife. The main character’s last name is DeTambles, and the book was adapted for television by Steven Moffat, the writer if this story.
- Joy to the World is Steven Moffat’s 50th script for Doctor Who.
- The hospital that Joy’s mother was in towards the end of the story was the same one from the David Tennant episode “Smith & Jones” (where we first met Martha Jones).

#DoctorWhoMarathon Ep 890 - Joy To the World (Story 32, Serial 15.1) - 25 Dec 2024 #DoctorWho 3/3 companion (Joy), who was gone for long periods of time. In the end the weird sci-fi stuff works out with a twist that annoyed some people. But overall I found the story to be fun & likable. #TrevLives
