Back to the Future is 40
This one feels bizarre. It just snuck up on me late this evening on 3 Jul 2025. I saw a meme online that Back to the Future turned 40 today, so I had to go look it up. Yup, indeed. Was released on 3 Jul 1985. Holy crap. That feels wrong, because it doesn’t FEEL 40 years old. It obviously is, but when you watch it, it doesn’t feel that dated. Oh sure, you could point to certain points in the movie that do, but overall, the entire feel of the movie is not that dated. It remains as close to a perfect movie that I have seen. Every time I watch it now, despite knowing everything that’s coming, I still get enjoyment out of it. The performances are perfect. It’s well cast, well written, and just a thorough joy to watch. Every time. Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Thomas F Wilson lead the cast, but it’s not just them. It’s a whole ton of other actors that bring the whole world to life – not mention the blokes who made it. Easily has to be one of my top 10 films of all time.
Thing is I didn’t decide to write this just to say how great it is. I wanted to pass on a remark that my now 20 year old daughter said to me earlier today out of the blue.. “Hey Dad, thanks for introducing me to the Back to the Future movies, I really love them”. That was a very cool thing to hear, and then to find it out it was the 40th, which neither of us realized earlier in the day when she said it.
You see many years ago (like when she was around 13/14 or so – I think), I showed her Back to the Future (and its sequels) as part of what I called this “Educational List” of movies – things I thought she SHOULD see. She liked some, didn’t like others, but she LOVED these. So much so that I’ve had reports of her trying to convert her friends. When they don’t know about Back to the Future, they get an earful from her on the movies, and how great they are.
I’m not here to write a full movie review, or we’d have like 6,000 words about it or something along those lines, but I wanted to drop a few words on the actual 40th anniversary of the movie. A movie that both myself and my wife saw when new in theatres back in the day. It’s been successfully passed on – with the proper reverence – to the next generation. I’m quite happy with that.
If you’ve for some reason NEVER seen the movies, I cannot recommend them highly enough. The entire trilogy is available on Blu-Ray in a great set. It’s also more recently made available in a 4K Blu-Ray set, which looks visually stunning. Or failing that, if you ever see them in theatres in some late night thing, or a proper anniversary re-release, go see it. They’re damn awesome.
One thing to add at the end as a laugh. Tom Wilson who played Biff also does stand up comedy. He’s for many years done this short song which is about Back to the Future and all the things he gets asked. It’s varied slightly over the years but the base structure is the same in all of them. This version here was the first one I saw and is still a riot. It’s less than 2 mins long, so watch this and have a laugh.
