Looking for par’Mach in All the Wrong Places

This Story: Season 5 Episode 3 (production code 501)
DS9 Overall: Episode 101
Trek Overall: Story 361, Episode 382
Airdate: 14 Oct 1996
Writer: Ronald D. Moore
Director: Andrew J. Robinson

Notes

  • The first episode directed by Garak actor Andrew J. Robinson.  It is the only DS9 episode he would direct, but he would go on to direct two episodes of Voyager.
  • A sequel to the episode “The House of Quark“.
  • Features the return of Mary Kay Adams’ Grilka, who last appeared in said episode.  This is her last appearance in the series. Fun fact about her: She is a descendant of US Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
  • While a long title, it isn’t the longest – the longest is the TOS episode “For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky“.
  • To that, the first time a Klingon word would appear in an episode title.  It wouldn’t happen again until 2021 in the Star Trek Lower Decks episode “wej Duj“.
  • Tumek is played by Joseph Ruskin.  He’s been in many Trek incarnations – he was Galt in “The Gamesters of Triskelion“, an unnamed Cardassian in “Improbable Cause“, a Son’a officer in Star Trek Insurrection, a Vulcan in Voyager’s “Gravity“, and a Suliban doctor in the Enterprise pilot “Broken Bow“.
  • Thopok was played by Phil Morris.  Morris has a wide range of Trek roles – going back to TOS as one of the children from the episode “Miri“. He was also a cadet in The Search for Spock, he was Remata’Klan in DS9’s “Rocks and Shoals”, he was John Kelly in Voyager’s “One Small Step“.  He also apparently was one of the actors that auditioned for Benjamin Sisko.
  • Worf sings Klingon opera in this episode.
