Take Me Out to the Holosuite

This Story: Season 7 Episode 4 (production code 554)
DS9 Overall: Episode 154
Trek Overall: Story 411, Episode 435
Airdate: 19 Oct 1998
Writer: Ronald D. Moore
Director: Chip Chalmers

Notes

  • The baseball influence here (and to a large extent the series overall) comes from show creator Michael Piller who was a huge baseball fan.
  • The second and final episode of the series directed by Chip Chalmers.  The only other one he directed was “The Magnificent Ferengi“.
  • In real life, Max Grodénchik (Rom) is quite an adept baseball player.  They forced him to bat the wrong way (he’s right handed), so his performance would look bad.
  • The scenes in the baseball field were filmed at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
  • According to the Deep Space Nine Companion book, the best real life player amongst the cast was Max Grodénchik, and the worst was Nana Visitor.
  • Behind the scenes, the baseball coach for the cast was Joey Banks.  Banks is the real life son of baseball legend Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs.  Banks appears in the episode as one of the unnamed Vulcan baseball players.  He also played a Cardassian, a Jem’Hadar and a Starfleet officer in various episodes.
  • Before the team got “Niners” uniforms, they practiced in real team caps.  Cirroc Lofton wore an Atlanta Braves cap.  He is real life nephew of the retired MLB player Kenny Lofton who the year before this was playing for the Atlanta Braves.
  • Nana Visitor’s character had both “Kira” and “Nerys” on the back of her uniform at various times in the episode.  No reason is given for the change/discrepancy.

#StarTrekMarathon Deep Space Nine Ep 154 - Take Me Out to the Holosuite - 19 Oct 1998 1/3 One of the most fun eps of #StarTrek overall, not just DS9. An old Vulcan rival of Sisko's shows up, challenging him to a baseball game. Basically the DS9 staff are BAD, and he tries to work them into shape.

#StarTrekMarathon Deep Space Nine Ep 154 - Take Me Out to the Holosuite - 19 Oct 1998 2/3 So much fun here, watching Sisko get ejected was great, Odo as the umpire was a particular highlight. The DS9 crew gets beaten handily, but still celebrates anyway. The "To Manufactured Triumph" at the end? 🔥

#StarTrekMarathon Deep Space Nine Ep 154 - Take Me Out to the Holosuite - 19 Oct 1998 3/3 This is my my wife's fav ep of DS9, so we watched it together this morning with breakfast. Normally I watch all these on my computer, but this one required the living room TV. "DEATH TO THE OPPOSITION!"
