Dish and Dishonesty

This Episode: Season 3, Episode 1
Black Adder Overall: Episode 13
Airdate: 17 Sep 1987
Written by Ben Elton & Richard Curtis
Directed by Mandie Fletcher

“Socks are like sex – tons of it about and I never seem to get any”.

Notes

  • The first episode of Hugh Laurie’s “George” – here the Price Regent in the late 18th / early 19th century.  It is also the first episode with Hugh Laurie as part of the main cast.
  • The pattern of calling Baldrick “Mr. S. Baldrick” starts here – the S stands for “sod off”.
  • Mrs. Miggins is finally shown.  The character (or more to the point an ancestor) by the same name was spoken about a couple of times in Series II, but never seen there.
  • The “Standing in the Back Dressed Stupidly and Looking Stupid Party” is apparently a parody of the real life “Official Monster Raving Loony Party” – who has continually run for office since 1983.
  • The reporter at the election results is the late Vincent Hanna (died in 1997).  He’s effectively playing himself here as in real life he’s very well known for by-election reporting.  His character here is said to be the great-great-great-grandfather of the real life Hanna.
  • The first time we hear someone call Black Adder “bladder”.

Black Adder Ep 13 - "Dish & Dishonesty" - 17 Sep 1987 1/3 "Hot crumpet burning my cheeks with shame.." Might be my most watched ep of #BlackAdder - I could write this without watching it. Black Adder plots to thwart the PM's plan to bankrupt the King (hello Hugh Laurie). There's a lot of political

Black Adder Ep 13 - "Dish & Dishonesty" - 17 Sep 1987 2/3 #BlackAdder humor. The writing is crisp, the comedy is both a mix of dumb humor and intelligent stuff. S3 for me is the peak of Black Adder. The origins of "Mr S Baldrick" are here. There's just so much gold, I could write 10 parts to this.

Black Adder Ep 13 - "Dish & Dishonesty" - 17 Sep 1987 3/3 Also this. The bit where #BlackAdder tries to get the prince to say antidisestablishmentarianism. He fails immediately, & his delivery of "anti distinctly minty monty" made me laugh SO hard, it crystallized my love of the series RIGHT THERE.
