Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges

This Story: Season 7 Episode 16 (production code 565)
DS9 Overall: Episode 166
Trek Overall: Story 423, Episode 447
Airdate: 1 Mar 1999
Writer: Ronald D. Moore
Director: David Livingston

Notes

  • The first of an 11 episode arc that closes out the Dominion War and Deep Space Nine as a series. As far as I know it’s not intended to be a single story with 11 parts to it, but it is very tightly wound together (ala Babylon 5), so watching these out of order would be near impossible.
  • The episode’s title is Latin, and translates to “In times of war, the law is silent“.
  • Features the return of Section 31 and Sloan, still played by William Sadler.
  • Features the return of the Romulan Cretak, although no longer played by Megan Cole (in “Image in the Sand” & “Shadows & Symbols“). Here she is played by Adrienne Barbeau.  It is the last time the character appears on the series.
  • We also get an appearance of a Romulan (Neral) who hasn’t been seen since the TNG two parter “Unification“. Here he is played buy Hal Landon Jr.  In the prior appearance he was played by Norman Large.
  • The USS Bellerophon scenes were filmed on the bridge sets of the USS Voyager, as they were both Intrepid class ships. This extended to exterior shots of the ship which was really re-used Voyager footage (Voyager’s call number is visible at times – NCC-74656).
  • The final episode of DS9 to be directed by David Livingston, who directed 17 episodes of DS9.  He also directed 2 of TNG, 28 of VOY, and 15 of ENT.
  • The first time a Federation ship is SHOWN to have visited Romulus.
  • The events of the episodes Statistical Probabilities, Broken Link, & The Quickening are recalled here.
  • The formal white uniforms as seen in Star Trek: Insurrection were used here for the only time on DS9.
  • It is stated that Romulan Ale is no longer illegal in universe here (although it is re-stated to be illegal again in Star Trek Nemesis, so ????)

First up, this story about Bashir & Sec 31 checking out our allies the Romulans. This is mostly about showing Bashir being compromised to Section 31

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Deep Space Nine Ep 166 - Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges - 1 Mar 1999 2/2 from their last appearance. I like the appearance of Adrienne Barbeau as Cretak. Bashir gets to do "real life" spy stuff like his holodeck programs. I had forgotten this one; really enjoyed the story.
