Major Star
This Episode: Season 4, Episode 3
Black Adder Overall: Episode 21
Airdate: 12 Oct 1989
Written by Ben Elton & Richard Curtis
Directed by Richard Boden
Notes
- Features the return of Gabrielle Glaister from Series II’s “Bells” as “Bob”. It’s the same bit, that people can’t figure out her gender properly.
- There’s a reference to Buster Keaton here, but Keaton’s first ever role of any kind was 1917, and he didn’t become well known until later than that. Black Adder IV takes place in 1917, so it’s unlikely they would have had widespread impressions of Keaton.
- Rowan Atkinson delivers the word “Bob” (for the first time) using the exact same cadence he did in “Bells“. I always loved that.

It goes well but only because Lt George gets dressed up in drag, and then Melchet falls for him. It's the goofiest concept in Series IV, IMO. This one features Hugh Laurie

Black Adder Ep 21 - "Major Star" - 12 Oct 1989 2/2 more than the others but there's lots of funny stuff to go around. It also features the return of "Bob" from Series II by the same woman, and again doing the gender confusion joke as last time. Once again, Stephen Fry is perfect as Melchet here.
