Daedalus

This Story: Season 4 Episode 10 (production code 186)
ENT Overall: Episode 86
Trek Overall: Story 675, Episode 714
Airdate: 14 Jan 2005
Written by Ken LaZebnik & Alan Brennert
Directed by David Straiton

Notes

  • The first episode to air in the final year for the show – 2005.
  • Establishes that the inventor of the transporter was Dr Emory Erickson.  I don’t believe that fact has come up in any televised episode since.
  • Erickson was played by Bill Cobbs.  Cobbs was in two of my favorite movies of all time – “The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3” (the 1974 original) as well as Trading Places. He was also in a few other TV series I liked – “Superior Donuts” & “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.“.   Man has a metric buttload of credits.  RIP dude.
  • The episode’s title is from Greek mythology.  In that, Deadalus is an inventor whose invention kills his son (Icarus).
  • Plot points from this episode feel similar to both the Voyager episode “Jetrel” and the TOS episode “The Ultimate Computer“.
  • This is an odd observation, but the last thing in the pre-title sequence is Erickson laughing heartily.  I thought it worked well as a transition to “Faith of the Heart” and the titles.  More than most episodes.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Enterprise Episode 86 - Deadalus - 14 Jan 2005One with a good base concept (let's do a story about the guy who invented the transporter). In execution, it wasn't the best. It's not exactly bad as such, but the story didn't hold me. Partially because it feels like a few

other eps we've seen (Voyager's Jetrel, TOS' Ultimate Computer). The actor they got to play Erickson (Bill Cobbs) was fine. Just felt like it was missing something I couldn't put my finger on. Some ongoing stuff with T'Pol relative to all the "stuff" she's been through was nice to see. Just "ok".
