An Obol for Charon

This Story: Season 2 Episode 4 (production code 204)
DSC Overall: Episode 19
Trek Overall: Story 702, Episode 745
Airdate: 7 Feb 2019
Story by Jordon Nadino, Gretchen J. Berg, & Aaron Harberts
Teleplay by Alan McElroy & Andrew Colville
Directed by Lee Rose

Notes

  • The first episode (of four) with Rebecca Romijn as Majel Barrett’s “Number One” character.  Her proper name wouldn’t be revealed until later in the season. She would later play this character in nearly every episode of Strange New Worlds.
  • The title of this episode is a reference to Greek mythology. An obol was the coin placed in the mouth of a dead person before burial as the toll for Charon, the ferryman on the river that divides the worlds of the living and the dead.  (This explanation courtesy of the Memory Alpha page).
  • David Bowie’s song “Space Odyssey” is sung in this episode by Stamets & Tilly.
  • The events of the Short Treks episode “The Brightest Star” are recalled here (relative to Saru).
  • This doesn’t have anything to do with the TOS episode “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” which involves a planet named Charon.

Rebecca Romjin (OG was Majel Barrett). We also get a generic "space thing" trapping the ship and they don't know why.. and Saru is battling an illness which has massive Kelpian repercussions. A lot going on this ep, including setup for the major season arc of "Control". This all hung together well.
