Die Trying

This Story: Season 3 Episode 5 (production code 305)
DSC Overall: Episode 34
Trek Overall: Story 716, Episode 760
Airdate: 12 Nov 2020
Story by James Duff & Sean Cochran
Teleplay by Sean Cochran
Directed by Maja Vrvilo

Notes

  • It is stated here that the current version of the Federation is 38 known planets, down from an unspecified number over 100 the last time the subject was brought up (DS9’s “Battle Lines“) and from a peak of over 350 at some unstated date (in dialog here).
  • We see multiple starships here at Federation HQ that have some relevance to past Trek.  The USS Excalibur-M is I think the furthest out “letter” we’ve seen in a ship registry.  There’s also the USS Voyager-J.
  • However the most notable was the “USS Nog”, which was said to be an Eisenberg class vessel.  This is a dual reference to the (at the time in real life) deceased actor Aaron Eisenberg from DS9 who played Nog on that series.
  • It is stated that the Burn occurred (likely) in the year 3069.
  • The first time we see a male Barzan.
  • The first of twenty one appearances by Oded Fehr as Starfleet Admiral Vance.  He would also play the character for six episodes in Starfleet Academy (as of Oct 2026 – likely more to come).
  • The first of ten appearances by famous actor and director David Cronenberg.  He played the character Kovich.  Kovich is later revealed to be Daniels, the recurring character in Star Trek: Enterprise operating here under the alias of Kovich.
  • The last episode with Rachael Ancheril as Lt. Nhan – as a regular.  She will make three more appearances in the series after this, but they’re scattered amongst the remaining 31 episodes.
  • The seeds for Emperor Georgiou’s departure from the series is laid here.   If you were watching this new, it would mean nothing, but knowing what happens to her, it started here.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Discovery Episode 34 - Die TryingA fun ep that Memory Alpha describes thusly: "After reuniting with what remains of Starfleet & the Federation, the USS Discovery & its crew must prove that a 930 year old crew and starship are exactly what this new future needs." That's

pretty spot on. I did like the upgraded look of Starfleet here, some of the new tech was pretty slick - kind of recaptured that feel of TOS being "advanced beyond real life" again. It is the last ep with Nhan as a regular (bummer, I liked her) We also get to see the Voyager-J & the "USS Nog".🖖 #ds9

This episode had some really nice visuals in any number of places - but mostly in the 1000 year in the future Starfleet. I have to imagine the folks making this show had a blast designing stuff that both looked familiar and WAY in the future at the same time. It's probably my fav part of this ep.
