Support The Bone!
Radio sucks. I don’t like it. I prefer to listen to my own CD’s. I’d have an iPod, but for the amount of music I have, I’d need the biggest one, and I can’t afford that.
What I’m about to write here further puts me in the “radio sucks” camp. When I do listen to radio, the only stuff I do is sports (and not even then, because I can’t stand most of the pre-pubescant prattle of the Ticket guys), or KRLD for news/weather/traffic & the Texas Ranger games). Rarely do I listen to the radio for music.
I briefly toyed with that during the early part of this year when the radio in my new truck I found was capable of handling “Digital text” which is a relatively new feature for standard radio where your radio display will optimally show you the band name and song of what’s playing along with whatever else the station wants to put there, which for me appears to be the call sign and frequency or something similar. Some stations wimp out and only put their station name and no song titles – what’s the point in that?
But I digress, getting to the point of why radio sucks even more now…
I just read where 97.1 the Eagle is no longer a rock station. It’s now a wimpy music station (“Sunny 97.1”) that plays crap like Nickelback and Cher. What the hell is with that?
When I first moved to Dallas in late 1992, there was another really great radio station – ZRock 99.1. It was a HEAVY METAL station, not just a rock station like 97.1 was or 93.3 is now. It played real metal. Good stuff. Then it was replaced by some Mexican music format – I forget exactly what. At the time, I was left with only 97.1 The Eagle. Eagle was around back then as a rock station, but with a metal station around, I peferred that. So when ZRock went away, I was annoyed (and still am to this day a little), but at least I had 97.1.
So a year or two ago (I forget when) I noticed that 93.3 came around. The Bone is a good mix of metal and classic rock. I’d prefer an all metal station, but I’ll take The Bone. It’s not bad at all for my tastes. So I had the Bone and Eagle, which were somewhat the same thing. I could care less about the DJ’s, I just listened to the music (rarely). But now 97.1 is gone, and we lose a good rock station. That leaves only 93.3 for me. As little as I listen to the radio, it’s probably fine for me, but the fact that I don’t have the CHOICE anymore is highly annoying.
I urge anyone who listens to Rock music to listen to and support 93.3 The Bone. Check ’em out here: http://www.933thebone.com. You can listen online, too – which is something else that a not a lot of stations want to do anymore – but that’s a rant for another time.
If only 93.3 The Bone would properly implement digital text, I’d be really happy. I really am hooked on that digital text thing. At first The Bone didn’t do it at all, but now they display merely “The Bone” on my radio display. They need to not do a half ass implementation and actually put the song names up there.
There’s more to read about this over at another local guy’s website here.

In the UK, we have something very similar to Digital Text, only we call it RDS (acronym for Radio Data Signals) and its been around here for some time, but some radio stations still dont use it properly.
As for Radio itself, I very rarely listen to it and don’t find much point to it, especially these days, where a lot (and I do mean a lot) of newer music is totally craptacular. Where I live (South West England) we have a local radio station that does play some old 80s music that I like but then they also decide that putting loads of local adverts and newer crap music in is a good idea (i don’t think so) and if you think that is bad enough, then playing the same newer crap over and over again in the same day is even worse, especially when you’re subjected to this radio station for 7 hours per day, 7 days a week, for 3 weeks, doing filing jobs for the UK’s National Health Service. In fact, was just hoping the end of the day would come, just so I could get home and listen to the stuff I like to listen to (which consists mostly of CD’s and legally downloaded mp3 files.)
My opinion of this matter is that I think a lot of the Radio Stations that exist today are a complete waste of time, and of the few Rock and 80s style stations that are left, I also think that we all should support them because once they’re gone, all that’ll be left are radio stations playing craptastic music (if you can call it music.)
Anyway my comment is over, and now back to our regular schedule.
I am a Bone-head too!
I to am an unhappy metal fan living in dallas texas. This town SUCKS!!!!! I often feel as if Im the ONLY person in this area that DOESNT listen to (c)rap, tejano, country, easy listening, and country. What is it with this market?!?!Z-Rock has come and gone TWICE!! 97.1 KEGL a crapchannel station is now gone too, not that its a great loss as they sucked anyway, but it was better than the choices that are left now. I know the market for a metal station in the dallas area exists, one need only attend a metal concert to see the amount of people the broadcast execs and their advertisers are FAILING to connect with and as a result are losing all those advertising dollars. HERES A NEWSFLASH PEOPLE Contrary to popular belief not everyone likes (c)rap/hip-slop. I for one and tired of being force fed this GARBAGE everytime I turn on the radio or tv or open a magazine or my kids are watching their cartoons…..the shit is EVERYWHERE. The media is forcing this down our throats and we need to do something about it. Write to Cumulus Broadcasting and ask them to put Z-Rock back on the air in the Dallas market!!!!!
I moved to Dallas in 92 as well. Radio has gone downhill since then. Thankfully, the internet, in my opinion has replaced FM. I just added a digital media streamer to my household that uses my broadband connection to stream mp3 based music. The amount of content available on shoutcast blows me away. I doubt I will ever turn on an FM signal again.
I agree with you 120%, bro! Our stuff out here in California has nothing but mexican music crap and hip hop BS. We got our own Bone out here as well but it’s on 107.7 in San Francisco. It’s hard to get a signal sometimes but once you do they play awesome songs. They stream their stuff online so it takes out the static.
I also found a station in San Diego that has the Mikey Show there. You’re in Dallas so you know who Mikey is. Hell, even Mikey’s doing the podcast thing and he’s still just as hilarious as he was when he was first in San Jose on KSJO before they fell victim to the beaners.
The Eagle, Z Rock and Q102 were awesome.I saw the Boners new commercial and eets tha claassik roock uf texass ya’ll. They might as well switch over to a country and pop format. The Bone sucks now that the good talented rockin hot djs are gone and it seems like their format is going in the direction of pop soft rock country music fans. They also canned the Metal Shop which to me was the best thing the only used to be good Metal Rock station in Dallas had going for it along with the talented Rockin djs they had. I will never listen to Whalton and Jhonston. They canned a good morning show just for those morons. That just sounds like Bo and Tim probably or though I would think so because I never listen. Nor will I listen to Mix and Jack Hoff that plays disgraceful bands with bands like Motley Crue. Disgusting and Disgraceful. Bone plays Roxxane you don’t have to wear a dress tonight with Metal sheesh.
I have lived in dallas since 1989, I moved here from Ewing NJ. Radio in NJ was great, you had CHOICESand ya had METAL!!!! Here in Dallas we had some choices but not many, then in the mid 90’s those choices turned into cRap, Country, Oldies, Tejano or Alternative……NO ONE plays REAL metal anymore……now in 2007 all we have is ONE FN STATION that plays almost metal music. Am I the only person in the D/FW area that doesnt like rap or tejano?!?! Clearchannel sucks, Cumulus sucks, the Bone blows now because they canned the morning show for some syndicated CRAP whiney and pink johnson or some crap. THANK GOD FOR XM!!!!
You guys should be ashamed of yourself for cancelling the Walton and Johnson show. It was the best thing on radio. This country needs a little controversy or we lose out to minorities. Illegal immigration is a huge problem and these guys made it known. You’ll be sorry that you let these guys go. I’m sure another radio station will pick them up and all your listeners will leave.
