I watch a lot of Nazi documentaries
Last night I couldn’t sleep. I had finished reading a book, and wasn’t ready to hit the pillow yet, so I flipped on the TV. I was’t expecting to be up long, so I didn’t watch any of the recorded things on my TiVo. So I flipped. I landed on the History Channel. There’s lots of good stuff on that channel.
As usual, they had a documentary on either Hitler or the Nazi party. There’s a lot of them on that channel, and over the years I’ve watched quite a lot of them. As usual, I got sucked in with this one, too. It was specifically about the Nazi party’s attempt to “validate” their claims on the superiority of the Aryan race. They sent a bunch of scientists to Tibet to the ‘Roof of the World’, to try and prove that the Aryan race which they believed was from the lost city of Atlantis had descendants of survivors spread out across the world.
I really have no idea why I watch so many of these. For awhile I used to theorize that it was because I have German blood in my ancestry. Over time I’ve come to discount that, because I never really pay much attention to my heritage in that regard. So I’m back to square one. Is it a train wreck kind of thing? I watch these because I know the outcome, and I know Hitler gets his ass kicked (eventually)? I’ve watched so many of these that it’s hard to find one that doesn’t have some angle on Germany, Hitler, the Nazi’s, Hitler’s Death, etc.. which I haven’t seen before. The most recent “new angle” one I watched was one that traced the lineage of Hitler’s family to modern day. That was pretty entertaining, as while Hitler isn’t known to have children of his own, he did have some company in the sibling department, so there’s a family tree from there.
Is there anyone else who seems to be sucked into watching these like I am?

I watch a lot of those too. My friend and I usually just refer to the History Channel as “the World War II channel,” but I do find a lot of the Hitler shows pretty interesting.
I think part of it is just the impact the Nazis, and Hitler had on history (and the fact that for all intents and purposes, Hitler is not in an extremely distant past.)
If nothing else, I think you’re definitely right about the train wreck thing.
Or maybe I just like the shows because I’m a history major… ;)
I should bring in Downfall for you to watch if you haven’t seen it. It’s a WWII movie shown from the perspective of Hitler and his generals, close quarters, all the way to the bunker finale at the end.
I thought it was interesting because you don’t usually see WWII movies from that perspective.
I’m way ahead. I’ve been watching and reading about Der Furer, and his German Republic since I was in grammar school. When you read and watch what this bastard did to the human race it makes you want to dig him up, and chop him into little pieces. I’ve since graduated from the the war in Europe, and I’m fixed on the war in the Pacific against the most radicals of all time, the Jap’s. American society, and most of the world feel that the A-Rabs from the Middle East are radical when they blow themself up, and murder others. They can’t hold a candle to the Nip’s. TOJO, and company had them high on saki. When the sound of “Banzai” was heard sure death was not far behind. Read what the Nip’s did to Chinese, and how many they murdered. The Chinese are still hearing the scream of “banzai” in their sleep. In closing, Sieg Heil—Sieg Heil…
P/s Since the U.S.of A. did the right thing in Iraq, the rest of of camel jockey’s in the Middle East have gone from living in the 12th century, and have upgraded themslves to the 16th century. Riding the camel will soon be a thing of the past for these Nomads. It may take a few years for these desert freaks to arrive into the 21st century. Maybe if they heard a few “banzai” screams it would bring them here sooner.
