The Emperor’s New Cloak
This Story: Season 7 Episode 12 (production code 562)
DS9 Overall: Episode 162
Trek Overall: Story 419, Episode 443
Airdate: 11 Jan 1999
Writer: Ira Steven Behr & Hans Beimler
Director: LeVar Burton
Notes
- The episode is dedicated to Jerome Bixby. Bixby wrote the original “Mirror, Mirror” episode back in the 60’s, and had died shortly before this episode aired.
- The final mirror universe story (of five) in Deep Space Nine. The next time we revisit the Mirror Universe was in the Enterprise Season 4 two parter “In a Mirror Darkly“. As of Oct 2025, all future Mirror universe stories in all other series take place in the past, this DS9 ep is the furthest forward in the mirror timeline.
- The tenth and final Deep Space Nine episode directed by LeVar Burton. It was also his second mirror universe episode.
- The final episodes for Mirror Garak, Mirror Vic (of which this was also his first episode), as well as Mirror Brunt.
- The second time we had a same sex (female) kiss on the series – the first being “Rejoined“.
- While technically a mirror universe story, it was created more as a Quark/Rom story, as the upcoming deep dive in the war and the end of the series wouldn’t really allow for a Ferengi heavy story.

The Grand Nagus gets himself captured in the mirror universe and has to be rescued. That's my problem. It's now

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Deep Space Nine Ep 162 - The Emperor's New Cloak - 11 Jan 1999 2/2 too easy to go there - like going down the block for a burger. Having said that, the alternate performances are always fun to see. This was made to have a Quark/Rom story before the war stuff kicked in.
