Pegasus Mail – SOS!

I’ve been using Pegasus Mail forever. It is my preferred email client – I believe it’s far superior in every way to most other commercial apps. Because of it’s old school method of dealing with email, it’s not subject to all the viruses and worms that plague more modern clients (hello Microsoft).
Anyway, I read this afternoon a message from the author that he’s contemplating stopping development on the software completely and not issuing any further updates. If you are a Pegasus Mail user, you will want to read this.
What disturbs me most about that is he’s given his users no facility to go “NO – WAIT!” By removing the ability for people to respond to his ultimatum of sorts, there is no facility to show him how his decision might affect people. Now I understand where he’s coming from in the angle of “Well, people don’t pay unless compelled to”. Well, you’re right. People don’t. But if folks had been told the situation was THAT drastic, there might have been a change seen. The additional thing is that as far as I know, this is the first public mention that the situation was this bad for David. I would prefer the chance to rectify that.
Don’t know if David will read this, but if he does, open it up again. I know I’d help out – I’m one of the guilty parties he talks about. It always was “I’ll pay for that later”, and later got forgotten about simply because of laziness and the fact that program doesn’t force me, yes.
Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, David.

You know that I dont use it and only have one time years ago. But yes that does suck.
I would hope that if his decision is final he would look to the Open Source community to continue his work and keep the project open for years to come.
With that he could still take donations, but not have to do it full time and not have to deal with the headaches of having a commercial product that he is giving away for donations only.
And to address your comment about you being one of the guilty parties… No time like the present.
It’s kind of odd he comes out with the sad news when it’s almost too late. :(
I sure hope he won’t let PMail die but rather make it OSS, donationware or payware. I’d rather spend an annual fee than have to deal with the trainwrecks that Outlook and Thunderbird are.
And now there’s a new announcement out on the pmail.com page that sounds even more dire and urgent.
So is that it? Will Pegasus be a thing of the past now? From what I’ve read, there’s a contradiction between the statement on the main page and the EOC, now updated as of the main-page announcement. Hopefully details will be forthcoming.
I too would have no problem with paying an annual subscription fee for Pegasus to maintain its support. The only concern I had a couple years ago when I went to buy a subscription was that the credit card payment system being used looked a little shaky to me and there wasn’t a Paypal option. I’m none too keen to clean up a mess caused by an accident with a payment processor.
As far as I’m concerned, Pegasus Mail is the best email client out there for my needs. I’m very sad to see it die.
We’ve been using Pegasus forever and I’m hoping Dave Harris will get back into the game. He needs to put the program out there as a leased program on a yearly basis. We would have no problem shelling out a subscription to it. I pay Symantec a yearly fee to keep me updated on virus defs.
I’m one of the ones that bought the pmail manual and I even have his Pegasus Mail clock hanging on my wall!
