Despite Yourself
This Story: Season 1 Episode 10 (production code 110)
DSC Overall: Episode 10
Trek Overall: Story 693, Episode 736
Airdate: 7 Jan 2018
Written by Sean Cochran
Directed by Jonathan Frakes
Notes
- The first episode of the second “half” of Season 1. These six episodes were referred to as “Chapter 2”. No other series of Discovery has episodes grouped together in this fashion.
- The first of eight episodes of Discovery directed by TNG’s Jonathan Frakes. The last episode of any incarnation of Trek directed by him prior to this was Voyager’s “Prototype” (some 23 years prior in 1995).
- Dr Culber is killed in this episode. It was however never intended to be permanent, although it will be awhile until he returns. From what I can gather, producers were concerned that they would be killing one of their gay characters, and apparently approached GLAAD organizations about whether it would be perceived negatively.
- There is a quick reference to the events of Star Trek Enterprise’s “In a Mirror Darkly“, which took place roughly 100 years prior (in universe) and was the last story to be in the Mirror universe prior to this.

mix of WTF is going on, and knowing where the story ends. As it's mirror, we get to see what others look like as alternates. Capt/Evil Tilly is the greatest. We also dig into what happened when Ash was tortured by the Klingons (which results in death of Dr Culber). You do wonder how the hell they

will get back? That's ongoing. This was *FAR* more enjoyable than I remembered. One fun thing about this ep. It's the first (of eight) directed by Jonathan Frakes. I love his episodes. Aside from the first couple when he was just getting started, they all have some great directorial choices.
