Project Daedalus
This Story: Season 2 Episode 9 (production code 2089)
DSC Overall: Episode 24
Trek Overall: Story 707, Episode 750
Airdate: 14 Mar 2019
Written by Michelle Paradise
Directed by Jonathan Frakes
Notes
- The third (of eight) episodes of Discovery directed by TNG’s Jonathan Frakes. He was originally supposed to direct the next episode, but real life production issues with the show forced the change.
- The last episode for Airiam, as the character is killed (by being spaced). It isn’t however the last episode for her actress Hannah Cheesman as she would appear in three more episodes, either via archive footage, dead, or in an alternate timeline.
- There is a Discovery novel that was released a few months prior to this episode titled “The Way to the Stars“. It contains background info on Burnham relative to her actions in this episode.
- The ninth (of twelve) appearances of Jayne Brook as Admiral Katrina Cornwell.
- The game kadis-kot gets a shout out here – it was mentioned numerous times on Star Trek: Voyager.

They work their way out of that of course with some good dialogue IMO. The idea of Discovery being a fugitive ship held some merit,

but they didn't stick with that idea enough, IMO. This is a Frakes directed ep, and there are some great unusual camera angles here. Quite liked that. We also find out about Starfleet's "Control" which sounds like their "Super AI" system - like Blake's 7's "Star One", or our own real life AI threat.

A recurring character dies (Ariam). In the last few eps, it was hinted that something was wrong, but not much detail. She's an "augmented human" whose systems were taken over by Control. It's portrayed well on screen, but we've not spent much time with the character for the death to resonate a lot.
