People of Earth

This Story: Season 3 Episode 3 (production code 303)
DSC Overall: Episode 32
Trek Overall: Story 714, Episode 758
Airdate: 29 Oct 2020
Written by Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt
Directed by Jonathan Frakes

Notes

  • The fourth of eight episodes of Discovery directed by TNG’s Jonathan Frakes.
  • The first episode (of nineteen) with Adira Tal, a Trill symbiont.  Adira is played by Blu del Barrio, who in real life identifies as non binary, and becomes the first Star Trek cast member to identify this way.
  • Adira is said to be a human hosting a Trill symbiont.  This was done once before – in the first episode ever with a Trill – TNG’s “The Host”.  Said human was Riker, played by Jonathan Frakes, who also directed this one.
  • A lot of backstory about “The Burn” and events surrounding that are divulged.  Including Earth left the Federation after that and is no longer a member.  Also exactly how the Burn wrecked spaceflight.
  • The second (of three) episodes with April Hussain as Sahil.
  • The first (of six) episodes with Phumzile Sitole as Diatta Ndoye, a 32nd century Earth Defense Force officer.
  • The first of two appearances by Kenneth Welsh as Senna – a prior host of the Tal symbiont. The other episode is the next one.

introduced to a new character, a Joined Trill named Adira Tal (a human) - something that was overcome since TNG's time. I liked the different segments of this, was a nice feel - but that shouldn't be a shock, it's a Frakes directed ep. This feels like a launching point for the series going forward.
