Day of the Dove

This Story: Season 3 Episode 7 (production code 3.11)
TOS Overall: Story 62, Episode 63
Trek Overall: Story 62, Episode 63
Airdate: 1 Nov 1968
Written by Jerome Bixby
Directed by Marvin J. Chomsky

Notes

  • The first (and only) episode of TOS with a female Klingon.  She was played by Susan Howard who I know quite well from the TV series Dallas (as Donna Culver Krebbs).
  • The first and only TOS episode with Michael Ansara as Kang.  He would turn up decades later as Kang again in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode “Blood Oath” as well as the Star Trek Voyager episode “Flashback“.
  • This was supposed to feature the return of Kor as the Klingon antagonist, but another job prevented John Colicos from returning.
  • This is the only time in the original series that intra-ship beaming happened.
  • The weapon used against Chekov by the Klingons is the exact same prop used by Mirror Spock in “Mirror, Mirror“.
  • In this episode, it’s said that the bulk of the Enterprise crew are trapped below via blocked bulkheads.  But they’re also shown to have use of the transporters as they beam around the ship to battle Klingons.  Why couldn’t they just beam the trapped crewmen to where the Klingons were to overwhelm them with numbers?

Love this. Kirk & crew are stuck fighting Klingons inside the Enterprise by an alien who prevents them being killed, keeping the cycle going. It also has the first ever female Klingon, played by Susan Howard, pic.twitter.com/vkwEKx519J

whom I know well from the series Dallas. Not a complex plot, but it works for me. The alien brings out hostile attitudes between some of the Enterprise crew, which is a different flavor to see in dialogue. pic.twitter.com/HW4aTulvQ8

If Susan Howard (front) is the first credited female Klingon, who is that in the back as they both appeared on screen at the same time.
