Dramatis Personae

This Story: Season 1 Episode 18 (production code 418)
DS9 Overall: Episode 18
Trek Overall: Story 286, Episode 298
Airdate: 31 May 1993
Written by Joe Menosky
Directed by Cliff Bole

Notes

  • A fun story, that I’m just going to lift completely from the Memory Alpha page (linked below): “During the filming of the episode, Nana Visitor slipped on a wet stairway and hurt her back. While Visitor wanted to film her scenes as usual, Rick Berman urged her to go to hospital. However, when she arrived at the hospital still in full makeup, the doctors initially ignored her back in favor of her “terribly broken nose.”
  • The clock that Sisko builds in this episode remains a prop in his office during many future episodes.
  • Jake Sisko does not appear in this episode (again).

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Deep Space Nine Ep 18 - Dramatis Personae - 31 May 1993 2/2 thing in a story like this is watching our regulars act different. This story was "ok", but nobody being in any real danger made the story feel a bit thin. Got some insight into Avery Books' acting range, tho.

    I agree with your analysis
    Honestly, I myself give it a 6
I wish they created some more “drama” with Quark or brought Garek in. He is an expert in politics after all!

I’d give it a 7 mostly on the performances, I just didn’t see a lot of drama here. At this point, they hadn’t developed Garak yet in that way. He was still mostly just a tailor with possible implications. All we knew about Garak didnt’ come till later.

Yes, true, probably they hadn’t decided yet on what to do with him by then. But it could be a great chance to reveal another side of him – for example, he could reveal his cunning, manipulative side, which would make it harder for him to play the role of “a simple tailor on the promenade.”
A good episode with some lost potential imo.

Thank you for the discussion really

In my opinion they hadn’t decided what to do with Garak here, so his inclusion with what we knew Garak to be later would be kind of out place here.
