"Taken over" Romana lets the Marshmen into the ship which causes chaos. The leaders eventually figure out that the Doctor can actually help them. The Doctor does figure out that all pic.twitter.com/3pthSgcSI2

the races are the same genetically. The Doctor defeats the Marshmen with simple oxygen, and the ship takes off. The ending felt rushed, but Adric stows away as the new companion. pic.twitter.com/ak8YuV5OSt
