The Abandoned

This Story: Season 3 Episode 6 (production code 452)
DS9 Overall: Episode 52
Trek Overall: Story 316, Episode 332
Airdate: 31 Oct 1994
Written by D Thomas Maio & Steve Warnek
Directed by Avery Brooks

Notes

  • I liked this quote from Avery Brooks about this episode..  “for me, it was very much a story about young brown men, and, to some extent, a story about a society that is responsible for the creation of a generation of young men who are feared, who are addicted, who are potential killers.”.  It comes from the excellent “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion” book, which is sadly out of print now.
  • Speaking of Brooks, this was his second episode of DS9 he directed.
  • The fact that the Jem’Hadar ar bred to be addicted to a drug is first mentioned here, although the name of said drug isn’t – that comes later (Ketracel White).
  • This episode follows up on a story line from “Playing God” where Jake said he was dating a Dabo girl.  We get to see said girl in this episode.
  • Odo’s new quarters make their first appearance in this episode.
  • The first episode to give us an indication of the writer that Jake will become later.
  • The events of the Voyager pilot take place in-between this episode and the next one (in universe).

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Deep Space Nine Ep 52 - The Abandoned - 31 Oct 1994 1/2 We meet what we find out to be an abandoned Jem'Hadar child. Odo bonds with him while they figure out what to do with him, and keep him from not killing everyone. There's also a B plot with Jake dating a Dabo girl.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Deep Space Nine Ep 52 - The Abandoned - 31 Oct 1994 2/2 This ep exists I think to keep the Jem'Hadar as a background narrative, but not an active threat as such. Designed to give us background into them. The Dabo girl thing is enjoyable too. Basically a character dev ep.
