The Enemy Within

This Story: Season 1 Episode 5 (production code 1.5)
TOS Overall: Story 6, Episode 6
Trek Overall: Story 6, Episode 6
Airdate: 6 Oct 1966
Written by Richard Matheson
Directed by Leo Penn

Notes

  • The attempted rape scene was apparently rough in real life for Grace Lee Whitney due to real life personal issues in her past.
  • This was the first filmed episode with the Vulcan neck pinch, but the episode before this (The Naked Time) was the first to air that.

The famed "transporter accident" splits Kirk into two - one "good", and one "evil", and the episode then spends time on how we as humans need both to survive. There's also a lengthy sequence with a landing party on a pic.twitter.com/hFlzYwh7gD

planet freezing and can't beam up due to same transporter accident. The obvious answer is send the shuttlecraft, but the show hadn't created the shuttle yet! I thought Shatner's acting here was pretty good. pic.twitter.com/gHowNhZhRw
