The Mind’s Eye

This Story: Season 4 Episode 24 (production code 198)
TNG Overall: Episode 98
Trek Overall: Story 197, Episode 200
Airdate: 27 May 1991
Teleplay by René Echevarria
Story by René Echevarria & Ken Schafer
Directed by David Livingston

Notes

  • The first episode to feature Denise Crosby in the role of Commander Sela, but in this episode she is only heard.  She is neither seen, nor named.  The character on screen who was obfuscated was played by actress Debra Dilley.
  • Much of this episode is inspired by the 1962 film “The Manchurian Candidate” with Frank Sinatra & Janet Leigh.
  • The first episode of Star Trek to be directed by David Livingston.  He went on to do a lot more Star Trek.  While he only did one more episode of TNG, he directed 17 episodes of Deep Space Nine, 28 episode of Voyager, and 15 episodes of Enterprise.
  • Klingon ambassador Kell was played by Larry Dobkin.  He also directed the original series episode “Charlie X“.
  • The first episode where Majel Barrett Roddenberry received credit for voicing the ship’s computer, although she had been doing that since “Encounter at Farpoint“.
  • The matte painting of the surface of Krios is the same one created for the episode “Angel One”, although it was modified for its appearance here.
  • The sash that Ambassador Kell wears is the same one worn by John Shuck as the Klingon Ambassador in both Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home & Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
  • We get another couple of shots of seeing what Geordi sees in his visor, something rare.
