Where No Man Has Gone Before

This Story: Season 1 Episode 3 (production code 1.2)
TOS Overall: Story 4, Episode 4
Trek Overall: Story 4, Episode 4
Airdate: 22 Sep 1966
Written by Samuel A. Peeples
Directed by James Goldstone

Notes

  • This was the first (filmed) appearances of William Shatner as Capt Kirk, James Doohan as Scotty, and George Takei as Sulu.  However, due to this airing third, it’s not the first on screen appearance for them.  It’s also the first appearance of Eddie Paskey as Lt. Leslie.
  • The Doctor here was not the same Doctor as either The Cage or Dr. McCoy – this Doctor was “Mark Piper” (played by Paul Fix) – the only episode with this character.
  • This was the famed “second pilot” which was made because Lucille Ball believed in the concept, and wanted it.
  • The actual filmed pilot was reworked slightly to be this episode that aired third in the season, but was mostly the same.  The original version is about 5 minutes longer, but was edited to fit in the show’s network runtime.
  • There is a canonical error in that Kirk is called “James R. Kirk” here, when it’s “James T. Kirk” everywhere else – this is largely overlooked as a production error of the time.

The 2nd pilot airs as 3rd ep. Capt Pike is replaced with Kirk, Scotty appears - still no McCoy. You can see that it's turning into the Star Trek we know, but still rough. The story involves the Ent leaving pic.twitter.com/WU7NPW3ubL

the galaxy which gives two crew members the power of gods via ESP. Kirk has to end up killing one of them to save the ship. Spock still pretty shouty here. Enjoyed this. Always wished for a sequel. pic.twitter.com/ABA6VIHYUa
