A couple of weeks ago I saw some odd looking things attached to a few streetlights around town. Attached here is a picture of one of them – taken about two blocks or so from my house. It’s not just this particular neighbhorhood, I’ve seen them in a few places in and around Garland.

Anyone have any clue what these things are?

That is probably either of four things.
    1) a speed monitoring device,
    2) a remote receiver for switching on/off street lamps,
    3) a wireless access point, or
    4) a strange alien device set to take over the world as we know it (or at least Texas.)
    Other than that, I haven’t a clue!
(Actually, its more likely to be number 1 or 2.)

THe devices are poletop radios placed by a company out of Richardson called NEXGENCITY i believe. It is used by police fire and first reposnders in the city of Garland. Allows 1MB plus broadband IP communications to all vehicles equipped withthe service. Give the polie the ability to for example download mugshots of suspecs to the laptops in their squadcars while driving at speeds up to 70 mph.
