Oh Waaaah.
Six Apart issued v3.0 of their Movable Type blog software today. They’re charging now. Everyone freaks the hell out cuz they have to pay now. Oh Waaaah.
A company releases software that got to be really REALLY popular. A community grows, and it becomes really popular. Then said company releases a new version and wants to charge for it, and automatically the software becomes bad, evil, spawn of Satan, etc, etc, etc..
Do folks want any cheese with that whine?
Well, sorry – I don’t believe that. A company has a right to make money. There’s far too many “GIve it to me great, and give it to me for free” people out there. Really cheeses me off. The way I use the software appears to fall under the rules for free, which is I’m sure the reason why I’ll probably get blasted, ignored, hated, etc “You’re still free, so you don’t care”.. My opinion isn’t what the masses believe, so I’m sure I’ll get ignored. Too bad.
There’s been several software packages in the past that have gone pay that I used for free. If the software is good enough, then it should get paid for. If I fell under the situation, I’d pay. I like the software. Sue me.
On the other hand, I can understand where some people feel betrayed, but the vitroil displayed seems a bit excessive to me. Wish most people would save comments until they get a chance to think things through and automatically say something sucks and is the worst decision ever RIGHT after it comes out.
UPDATE Jan 2022: I wrote this back when my blog used to use Movable Type software. Needless to say I don’t use them anymore.

It’s more than it simply being licensed, it’s that it happened so suddenly, without warning and contrary to what they had been indicating all along.
I was in the alpha and beta program, and we were assured that MT3 was not the fabled MT Pro, which was going to be feature rich and licensed …
MT3 would be free still, and merely a point release for MT, with some better back end stuff.
Then this morning the steep licensing system came into play, and has left a lot of people cold and unsure of what exactly Six Apart were thinking.
I understand FULLY that they need to make money. AND support that. But shit, going from free to THAT? No. Not going to support that. ALSO the ONLY reason that you are not bitching is because YOU have one blog One author and have no problems. You said it.
On the other hand if you (Mr. J) had a handful of shit, AND people that you have already given stuff to.. You would be right up there at the top bitching. Or you would just say fkit and shut it down. I know you well enough to know that.
And yes I have time to change. Until a bug is found in 2661 that will let comment spam go farther and not be blocked out. Or any other exploit is found that is fixed in 3.0
To top it all off Since I maintain a lot of blogs for people now I will have to keep up with tons of passwords. So I can log in as that author.
Yea I am pissed. I was thinking that this upgrade was going to be about 70.00 And I was all for that. IMHO MT is worth it. So While I bitch and drink my wine and cheese, if YOU were me would you pay for mt. My price to keep everything just the way it is. 299.00
And MT does not Suck. I dont think I could ever say that.
