Inside Edition & the Foul Ball guy

As anyone local here in the Dallas area knows, over the weekend, there was a story where a 4 year old got trampled (at least pushed, not really “trampled”) by some jackass who was going after a foul ball. He wouldn’t give it back to the kid, he got booed by the fans, the in stadium TV guy couldn’t get him to give up the ball, and he was roasted by Tom Greive & Josh Lewin, our TV guys. It made national coverage over the weekend and into this week. Here’s a a link with more info about the story if you haven’t heard about this – you probably should read this link before reading the rest of this blog entry.
Dallas Morning News story about this with video link.
First off, I can’t believe how much national attention this has gotten. Beyond Tom Grieve and Josh Lewin on the game talking about it, I’ve heard ALL the sports radio stations locally (ESPN, Fox, Ticket) wailing on this guy..
Then it was on Baseball Tonight, John Kruk & guys were railing on this guy. Then it was on ESPN’s Sportscenter and ESPNEWS. I was reading national coverage about it on the AP Wire. I then heard Jim Rome today talking about it. There’s also this article in tomorrow’s newspaper about it, too.
But for me personally, the best thing about all this is what happened to me personally tonight is this…

In the first inning of the Reds/Rangers game tonight, my wife and I got a call from her mother – who lives in another state. Apparantly, someone from the TV show Inside Edition called her about this situation. My in laws. In another state. When asked how she got their phone number, apparently someone from Inside Edition had found my web site, saw that I was a fan, and then looked up info on me – they found another website I’ve done with my wife’s maiden name on it, then called that town’s directory assistance, and lucked out and got my in laws.
They wouldn’t give out my home phone number, but took a message, relayed it to me, and then I called them back. What did they want? They wanted to know if I knew the name of the fan who rolled over the kid in the aisles, as they thought it would be a good story to talk to that guy.
That just absolutely blew me away that they’d call my in laws on a lark that they could get through to me. And then if you read that link I posted above, Inside Edition was at the 4 year old’s house too, so I’m not sure what IE will be doing on this story.

That is nuts that they would track you down like that… just about as crazy as seeing this story being told by Tom Brokaw..
