This Story: Season 2, Story 4. Production Code M.
Overall: Story 12, Episodes 54-57
Airdates: 16 Jan 1965 to 6 Feb 1965.
Written by Dennis Spooner.  Directed by Christopher Barry

Episode Titles

  1. The Slave Traders
  2. All Roads Lead to Rome
  3. Conspiracy
  4. Inferno

Notes

  • Events of this story (The Great Fire of Rome) are referenced decades later in the serial, “The Fires of Pompeii” with David Tennant’s Doctor.
  • The cliffhanger carrying over from the last story (the Tardis falling off a cliff with the occupants inside) was not followed up on. That always disappointed me, I wanted to see what happened to the crew.

The first semi comedy. It's not all out, but definitely slants that way. The cliffhanger from the last ep is ignored with the Tardis falling off a cliff. That annoyed me. pic.twitter.com/yeC3Um188f

Most of Ep1 is spent showing the crew exploring and enjoying life. Towards the end, Ian & Barbara are attacked/captured, and The Doctor & Vicki travel to Rome to meet Nero. pic.twitter.com/oDovXlq7lS

Nero is played somewhat as a buffoon. Barbara is an asst to the Emperor's wife, who is chased by Nero. The Doctor saves Nero from being poisoned, and also embarrasses him at a recital. pic.twitter.com/TFdHf3r3uR

The Doctor gives Nero the idea for the Great Fire of Rome. This is referenced decades later when the Tenth Doctor talks to Donna. In the confusion with the fire, the Tardis crew escapes. pic.twitter.com/hUlkMT9oYR
