The Massacre

This Story: Season 3, Story 5. Production Code W.
Overall: Story 22, Episodes 103-106
Airdates: 5 February 1966 to 26 February 1966
Written by John Lucarotti & Donald Tosh (4). Directed by Paddy Russell.

Episode Titles

  1. War of God
  2. The Sea Beggar
  3. Priest of Death
  4. Bell of Doom

Notes

  • This story is also known as “The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve”, depending on what documentation you read.
  • This is one of three stories of which zero footage survives. There are a handful of promo photos which are all seen in the reconstruction, but no clips, no footage, nothing.  I think it really hurts the story, as I had a very hard time caring about any of the political intrigue in this story.  The last 5-6 minutes of Episode 4 I rather liked, as it briefly had the Doctor alone reminiscing about all his past companions.  That whole sequence and the introduction of the new companion (Dodo Chaplet) was quite nice. But the rest of the story I didn’t care for.

The person the Doctor went to see is in jail; he saw the wrong person. Steven finds Anne & they wait at Preslin's store. This story is hard to follow due to reconstruction. pic.twitter.com/szkmqVupYw

The Abbott is murdered, and Steven is chased by an angry mob. The political stuff in this ep was totally "eh" to me. I feel the lack of a proper ep works against the story. pic.twitter.com/NeCLNvjBey
