Attack of the Cybermen

This Story: Season 22, Story 1. Production Code 6T
Overall: Story 138, Episode 633-634
Airdates: 5 Jan 1985 – 12 Jan 1985
Written by Paula Moore
Directed by Matthew Robinson

Notes

  • This first story of Season 22 uses a format of 45 minute episodes vs the 22 minute episodes that were the norm through the first 21 series of the show.
  • The Tardis’ chameleon circuit gets briefly fixed and the Tardis turns into a french dresser, a pipe organ, and some sort of ornate door before eventually returning to a police box.  There is no stated reason (on screen) as for why the Tardis reverted to a police box and hasn’t ever changed since.
  • Features the only black Cyberman ever shown in the entire history of the show.  It was colored that way to blend in the sewers.  Why they didn’t do more of that kind of thing I don’t know.
  • The Tardis lands at 76 Totters Lane for the second time in the series.  First was in the original story “An Unearthly Child“.  Later on in Sylvester McCoy’s era, they revisit the place in “Remembrance of the Daleks“.

Big change for Season 22 - eps are 45min vs 25min - same length, just fewer eps. We also for the 1st time had the Doctor fix the chameleon circuit, which meant his Tardis can look like pic.twitter.com/fZAoyzrt67

something other than a blue police box, which was fun. However, my fav part was that this was a sequel to two 60's stories - The Tenth Planet & Tomb of the Cybermen. Lots of Cyberman pic.twitter.com/nFiaXbHXYN

lore here. We also got Lytton from last series' Dalek story. And the Cyber Controller is the same actor who last played that role in the 1967 Tomb serial. So much fun here. LOVED THIS! pic.twitter.com/5jlTpjNXtT

The first time I watched this I found the scene where the Doctor explains the events of The Tenth Planet as gold, because you couldn't see 60's stories then. Latched onto this one hard pic.twitter.com/BKILga3fOS

because of that. We meet the Cryons, the original residents of Telos b4 the Cybermen took it over. The Tardis materializes in the Tombs and is the only time it changes shape properly. pic.twitter.com/EZg6wX8iHR

The Cryons help defeat the Cybermen, Lytton is killed, & the Tardis is a police box again. What I mostly liked about this story is the nostalgia that flows through it. Lots of death. pic.twitter.com/3g21xxJbz8

The only black Cyberman in the entire history of the show in the background.
It’s probably just me being pedantic, but I didn’t like the titles in all capital letters like this.
