Doctor Who Marathon Update
I recently passed another milestone in my Doctor Who Marathon, and I felt like dropping a short update.
This past Monday, I got to the 20th anniversary special, “The Five Doctors”. That was the end of the 20th season and it aired on 23 Nov 1983 (in the US). The was the first Doctor Who episode I watched when I intentionally sat down to try the show. You can read what I wrote about that here.
However, as of today, I’m now two episodes into Series 21 (episode 610 of 871), which is the last for Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor. The years and Doctors will start dropping faster, as in real life we’re entering an unstable period in the show’s history. The number of episodes per season drops radically after Season 21, and stays there till the show ends in 1989. The modern show isn’t much better, as the most you get in a series is 14 (counting the Christmas special). So things will start moving faster, and I thought to put some projected end dates:
- Season 21 – Mar 23 (Peter Davison on Mar 19, Colin starts before end of season)
- Season 22 – Apr 5
- Season 23 – Apr 19 (End of Colin Baker)
- Season 24 – May 3
- Season 25 – May 17
- Season 26 – May 31 (End of Sylvester McCoy)
- McGann TV Movie – Jun 1
- Series 1 – Jun 14 (Christopher Eccleston)
- Series 2 – Jun 28
- Series 3 – Jul 12
- Series 4 – Jul 31 (plus specials – end of David Tennant)
- Series 5 – Aug 13
- Series 6 – Aug 27
- Series 7 – Sep 13 (plus specials – end of Matt Smith)
- Series 8 – Sep 25
- Series 9 – Oct 9
- Series 10 – Oct 23 (End of Peter Capaldi)
- Series 11 – Nov 3
- Series 12 – Nov 14
- Series 13 – Nov 23 (plus specials – End of Jodie Whittaker)
The thing is what hasn’t aired yet is unknown. There’s three specials that are airing for the 60th anniversary with David Tennant as the 14th Doctor in November 2023. But we don’t know the dates. Depending on what they end up being I might double up to bring those in line with 23 Nov 2023, but we’ll see. Then Ncuti Gatwa’s first episode is rumored to be 25 Dec 2023, we’ll see.
But I’m making progress – I can see the end, despite only being in the 5th Doctor, and Whittaker is the 13th. Once I finish, I’ll tack on new episodes to the overall pile as they happen in the future.
Feeling good – never once thought about stopping. Been enjoying this a lot.
One amusing postscript. If you go to google now and search for ‘Doctor Who Marathon’ – my site comes up as the first result. That’s pretty amusing to me. That could have something to do with the fact that I registered a domain name for this – http://www.doctorwhomarathon.com :)
