The Mysterious Planet
TOATL: The Mysterious Planet
This Story: Season 23, Story 1. Production Code 7A
Overall: Story 144, Episode 646-649
Airdates: 6 Sep 1986 – 27 Sep 1986
Written by Robert Holmes
Directed by Nicholas Mallett
Notes
- Officially the whole of Season 23 is a single story with 14 episodes. As transmitted, “The Mysterious Planet” appears nowhere, it is officially all “The Trial of a Time Lord” episodes 1-14. However, for brevity’s sake, I’m having separate pages for the four parts of the story, as they have individual directors, writers, and production codes (for the most part). All four parts (and 28 or so tweets) on a single page would be too much, I think.

is connected by "trial" sequences. The individual segments have their own titles that don't appear on screen. This first one is "The Mysterious Planet". Written by Who vet pic.twitter.com/XIjgOYIEi6

Robert Holmes, it has all his story mannerisms, & introduces one of my fav characters, Sabalom Glitz. The opening model sequence is the best sfx work ever in classic Who. pic.twitter.com/M8bE1Jb2m0

The S23 blu-ray set had extended eps - I'm using them for this watch. To quote Colin Baker, "even more of ME!". You can see Robert Holmes all over this story, as it has pic.twitter.com/3w3ljJZj5N

his famous style, but this probably isn't his strongest. Joan Sims I thought was totally flat and non threatening. Loved Peri & 6's relationship. Shame it came so late. pic.twitter.com/Tqx1NLaSGX

Queen Katryca likes to throw people in a holding cell vs taking any action, and that back and forth I think helps with some of the boredom of her parts of this story. pic.twitter.com/mZ5kU3X295

Liked the Drathro robot - thought it was well executed. I also continue to love Glitz. Wish there was more of him. 6 calls Peri Sarah Jane here.? Cliffhanger is weak. pic.twitter.com/XNDOgg9Xza

The Trial parts of this seem to be minimized as we approach the end of the 1st segment. Found myself oddly glad that Katryca was offed, as she was annoying. The Doctor pic.twitter.com/ck331yUhn5

keeps the explosion from killing everyone, & takes the robot down, freeing everyone. Glitz uses the Brig's line "five rounds rapid". The ending felt a bit rushed to me. pic.twitter.com/qNZ5R69UiO
