Out of Time

This Story: Season 6, Episode 6
Overall: Story 36, Episode 36
Airdate: 11 Nov 1993
Written by Rob Grant & Doug Naylor
Directed by Andy De Emmony

Notes

  • This is the last episode written by or having any oversight by Rob Grant, who had a falling out with Doug Naylor.  Doug continued on and still does to this day in charge of Red Dwarf.
  • The only episode to end on a cliffhanger that was actually resolved.  The season 2 episode Parallel Universe had one too, but its resolution was “resolved” in a text scroll at the start of the next episode.
  • While it is not stated in this episode, the future selves are from 15 years in the future.  This was said by Lister in the recap of this episode’s event during the resolution in the next episode – “Tikka to Ride“.
  • Due to the nature of the ending of the plot of this episode, they included a “To be continued” card before the credits started rolling, so you didn’t think the series was over.

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 36 - Out of Time - 11 Nov 1993 1/2 S6 ends with a weird one. The crew navigates a series of "unreality bubbles". Once through they end up with a time drive. This has the end result of their future selves coming back to current time to get info from the ship.

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 36 - Out of Time - 11 Nov 1993 2/2 Lister is just a brain, the others have become cultural snobs in the future. A fight ensues, and the future selves end up killing the current version of the crew, blowing up Starbug, leaving the season on a cliffhanger.
