The Beginning

This Story: Season 10, Episode 6
Overall: Story 55, Episode 61
Airdate: 8 Nov 2012
Written by Doug Naylor
Directed by Doug Naylor

Notes

  • The original plan for the final two episodes of the series was for a plot that would see the reintroduction of Kristine Kochanski. However, production problems meant the plan had to be ditched, and two new episodes were written at short notice.
  • Little more than half of this episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience.
  • The title of this episode is a direct reference to the first ever episode of Red Dwarf, “The End“. So much so that the last line of this episode “The slime’s coming home” is identical to that first episode.  The difference is that Rimmer utters the line here vs Lister in the original.
  • There is a post credit scene where where Hoggy the simulant pops up again for a challenge of a duel.  Funnier than some of the Marvel post credit scenes.
  • The episode was dedicated to Peter Wragg, the BBC Visual Effects Designer who created the original spaceship models for Red Dwarf, and oversaw the effects for the first seven series.

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 61 - The Beginning - 8 Nov 2012 3/3 change Rimmer going forward but wasn't really followed up after this episode. The title was a direct reference back to the first ep ("The End") w/Rimmer saying "The slime's coming home!" The simulant idea was from unmade #RedDwarf movie.
