The Return of the Archons

This Story: Season 1 Episode 21 (production code 1.??)
TOS Overall: Story 21, Episode 22
Trek Overall: Story 21, Episode 22
Airdate: 9 Feb 1967
Written by Boris Sobelman (via Gene Roddenberry)
Directed by Joseph Pevney

Notes

  • This episode contains the first reference to the “Prime Directive”.
  • The street scenes were filmed on a set originally constructed for the 1939 movie “Gone With the Wind”.
  • Landru is played by Charles Macaulay.  He also played Prefect Jaris in “Wolf in the Fold“.
  • The absorption booth console was also reused several times in the series. It reappeared (with modifications) as a relay station in the second-season episode “I, Mudd“, as a Federation outpost control panel in the third-season episode “The Lights of Zetar“, the housing for the Romulan cloaking device in the third-season episode “The Enterprise Incident“, and as the force field control station at the penal colony Elba II in the third-season episode “Whom Gods Destroy“. (This was lifted from Wikipedia, but it was too good).

At first this ep is a bit of a WTF is going on - the people on the planet Beta III act quite strangely. We run into someone named Landru who wants to make everyone "of the body". In the end it turns pic.twitter.com/pNH5gGkPCL

out to just be a computer. We get the classic "Kirk talks a computer into self destructing" ending. First time we get a mention of the "Prime Directive". It's an OK episode, not the greatest, though. pic.twitter.com/MbqNQfDFWy
