This Episode: Season 2, Episode 3
Black Adder Overall: Episode 9
Airdate: 23 Jan 1986
Written by Ben Elton & Richard Curtis
Directed by Mandie Fletcher
Notes
- The primary guest star (as Captain Rum) is Tom Baker, the fourth lead actor in Doctor Who. For the longest time this was my favorite Black Adder II episode simply because of that. :)
- The other guest star is Simon Jones as Sir Walter Raleigh who is well known for being Arthur Dent in the radio and television series of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy“.
- The singing child was voiced by Miranda Richardson – the Queen.
- They mention a “Mrs. Miggins from the pie shop here”. She’s described as bedridden from the nose down. She never appears here, but does in Series III (as a recurring character) – not with that kind of affliction.
Closing Credits Lyrics
Sir Francis and Sir Walter had
Discovered New Worlds and new nations.
And though Blackadder thought them mad,
He tried his hand at navigation.
Blackadder, Blackadder,
He saw the oceans foam.
Blackadder, Blackadder,
He should have stayed at home.
Blackadder, Blackadder,
He heard the New World call.
Blackadder, Blackadder,
Discovered bugger all!

One of my fav performances - Tom Baker (yeah, that one) guests as Capt Rum - a quite goofball performance. It's unlike the Doctor in just about every way - super fun appearance. Rum, Black Adder, Baldrick, & Percy

Black Adder Ep 9 - "Potato" - 23 Jan 1986 2/2 #BlackAdder go on a voyage that seems to have no real purpose where they get totally lost for two years. It's VERY much a Series II story - this plot could not have worked in any of the other series. Also has a healthy dose of Black Adder annoyance.
