Distant Origin

This Story: Season 3 Episode 23 (production code 165)
VOY Overall: Episode 65
Trek Overall: Story 494, Episode 521
Airdate: 30 Apr 1997
Written by Brannon Braga & Joe Menosky
Directed by David Livingston

Notes

  • Running fired torpedo count: 19 / Confirmed crew deaths since pilot: 13 (crew of 141).
  • A full spread of torpedoes was set up to launch, but then it didn’t happen, so torpedo count remains the same.
  • The base of this episode (the human bone fragments) are the remains of Ensign Hogan who was killed in “Basics, Part II“.
  • The events of THIS episode are followed up in Season 7’s “Friendship One“.
  • Some of the warp effects for the Voth ships was a reused effect from the episode “Threshold“.
  • The throne that Minister Odala is sitting on was re-used as Chaotica’s throne in “Bride of Chaotica!“, and allegedly was also used in the Coneheads movie.
  • Henry Woronicz plays Gene here.  He was also D’Dan in TNG’s “The Drumhead” and Quarren in Voyager’s “Living Witness“.
  • Christopher Moore was Tova Veer here.  He was also an unnamed stowaway in the Voyager episode “The Disease“.
  • Marshall Teague plays Haluk in this episode.  He was previously Temo’Zuma in the DS9 episode “Hippocratic Oath“.
  • The first time I can recall that the primary starship of a Star Trek series was itself “beamed” somewhere.
