Back to Reality
This Story: Season 5, Episode 6
Overall: Story 30, Episode 30
Airdate: 26 Mar 1992
Written by Rob Grant & Doug Naylor
Directed by Juliet May & Grant Naylor
Notes
- This is the last episode with Hattie Hayridge as Holly. When we next see Holly (16 episodes later, and all subsequent appearances after that), Holly is played by Norman Lovett again.
- The first episode with Cat’s alter ego, “Dwayne Dibbley”.
- There is a huge time jump between the events of this episode, and the Season 6 premiere, “Psirens”. They’re detailed in a web comic book called “Prelude to Nanarchy”. Info about the comic is available here. The comic itself is viewable on the Internet archive.
- I spent a long time working for Apogee Software / 3D Realms. In our game “Rise of the Triad”, I played a character called “Sebastian Krist”. This was roughly two years after this episode of Red Dwarf aired, and I started saying that my character’s middle name was “Doyle”, a reference to Lister’s alter ego character in this episode “Col Sebastian Doyle”.

S5 goes out with a bang, in an ep that is considered best overall for some. We're made to believe that the entire series to this point was a total immersion video game "Red Dwarf", and that our crew are not who they pic.twitter.com/xiFIOrsn0A

think they are, leading the them to the point of suicide. Dwayne Dibbley is born here. The alternate reality stuff is awesome. Banger of an ep. The last for Hattie Hayridge as Holly.
