Chains
This Episode: Season 2, Episode 6
Black Adder Overall: Episode 12
Airdate: 20 Feb 1986
Written by Ben Elton & Richard Curtis
Directed by Mandie Fletcher
Notes
- The second of three characters played by Hugh Laurie in Black Adder. From the next episode after this, he plays the more well known “George”. Oddly his first two came in two consecutive Series II episodes (this one and the prior).
- The ending where everyone is killed off wasn’t added until late tin the series. It happened partially due to Tim McInnerny and Miranda Richardson leaving the series and the producers wanting to change the setting again for the third series.
- The last episode of Black Adder where the closing credits have lyrics to them. There was a chorus with no lyrics in Series III, and Series IV was just music.
Closing Credits Lyrics
Beware, all ye who lust for fame!
The path of life is most uncertain.
Prince Ludwig thought he’d won the game,
But now, the Kraut’s gone for a Burton.
Blackadder, Blackadder,
He beat the Hun by luck.
Blackadder, Blackadder,
He’s smarter than a duck.
Lord Melchett, Lord Melchett,
Intelligent and deep.
Lord Melchett, Lord Melchett,
A shame about the sheep!

Edmund & Melchet get kidnapped - most of this one is them trying to escape and avoid torture. This one is less funny than others, which is probably why I don't remember it.

Black Adder Ep 12 - "Chains" - 20 Feb 1986 2/2 #BlackAdder Hugh Laurie (Ludwig) is the strength here, making an otherwise meh ep more enjoyable. It's nothing to do with his George character later. In the end, Ludwig makes his way to the Queen's place, killing everyone - a Black Adder tradition.
