There is a Tide
This Story: Season 3 Episode 12 (production code 312)
DSC Overall: Episode 41
Trek Overall: Story 722, Episode 767
Airdate: 31 Dec 2020
Written by Kenneth Lin
Directed by Jonathan Frakes
Notes
- The sixth (of eight) episodes of Discovery directed by TNG’s Jonathan Frakes, and the third this season.
- The episode title comes from Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”.
- Three regular characters do not appear in this episode (Nhan, Culber, & Saru). However Nhan has left the series at this point, not sure why still credited – and Saru does appear in the recap, but not in the new stuff.
- The original title of this episode was “The Good of the People”.
- The first of two appearances by Kenneth Mitchell as Aurellio (the other is the next episode). Aurellio has a futuristic looking wheelchair as Mitchell in real life has ALS. Mitchell also played the Klingon Kol in five episodes of Season 1, the Klingon Kol-Sha in “Point of Light“, the Klingon Tenavik in “Through the Valley of Shadows”. He also voiced three unnamed characters in three separate Lower Decks episodes as well.
- Burnham executes the rarely performed Vulcan neck pinch – by a human.

It's a Frakes directed ep, so that's a positive. I did like the "trying to retake Discovery" part of this. I didn't care for the thug

from earlier in the season reappearing. I mean it's OK and Frakes direction is a plus, but I really would have preferred they left the thug behind. Burnham spends most of the ep being John McClain in trying to retake the ship/free her people. The negotiation scenes felt sluggish/too long, tho.
