Bread and Circuses

This Story: Season 2 Episode 25 (production code 2.14)
TOS Overall: Story 54, Episode 55
Trek Overall: Story 54, Episode 55
Airdate: 15 Mar 1968
Written by Gene Roddenberry & Gene L. Coon
Directed by Ralph Senesky

Notes

  • The main guest actor here is William Smithers.  I know him VERY well as Jeremy Wendell from Dallas.  He and Larry Hagman are in probably my favorite individual scene from all 356 episodes of Dallas together.
  • The last “proper” episode of Season 2.  While there is one more episode after this, that one was an attempted pilot for a spin off from Star Trek that didn’t fly, and the overwhelming majority of that story is angled towards the story for the attempted spinoff.
  • The entrance to the caves in this episode was also used as the entrance to the Batcave in the 1960’s “Batman” TV series.

Another ep with a planet who has copied some aspect of human culture - this time the Romans. Enjoyed this ep this time, which I don't remember doing in the past. In the end, this is an allegory for pic.twitter.com/dhpVmRJAEC

Christianity with them worshipping the "Son" (not the sun as you assume it is in the ep). The actor who plays Merik I know VERY well from the show Dallas. The ending was a tad quick, I thought - ended oddly. pic.twitter.com/xnqr4GphaB

There isn’t anything special here, I just liked the camera angle as it was one we hadn’t seen to this point.
