This Story: 2019 New Year’s Day Special. Production code 11.11
Overall: Story 287, Episode 857
Airdate: 1 Jan 2019
Written by Chris Chibnall
Directed by Wayne Yip
Notes
- This is the first episode to air on New Year’s Day since David Tennant’s finale, “The End Of Time” (Part 2)
- This is the only episode that airs in the whole of 2019 – the next series (Series 12) won’t air until January 2020 – a full 365 days later.
- This story had no title sequence, the second Whittaker era episode to do this (at this point).
- The end part of the story took place at the real life GCHQ facility (an English Government facility). The next day they tweeted out that everyone was OK, and they had cleaned up from the Dalek attack. Funny stuff – I’ve embedded that tweet below with my own.

Dalek! This was well written, showing how a single Dalek is enough. The path to the Dalek's reincarnation was a bit weird, but once it was back, it was great. The Dalek looks different, pic.twitter.com/O8ii1x56Z7

due to it coming back oddly. Love what happened with Lin and the Kaled mutant - good stuff. We also get Ryan's Dad who ends up being integral to the plot. Overall, an excellent special. pic.twitter.com/BqctqbPN1I
We’ve just about finished cleaning up the mess from the Dalek attack last night, but we’re happy to confirm GCHQ is still at full operational capability #DoctorWho pic.twitter.com/cTtmgad4oc
