Rosa
This Story: Series 11, Story 3. Production code 11.4
Overall: Story 279, Episode 849
Airdate: 21 Oct 2018
Written by Malorie Blackman & Chris Chibnall
Directed by Mark Tonderai
Notes
- The actress who played Rosa Parks (Vinette Robinson) had been in Doctor Who before. She was Abi Lerner in the David Tennant episode, “42” (also written by Chris Chibnall).
- The closing credits did not have the Doctor Who theme (I think for the first time being replaced by actual music). They were replaced by the song “Rise Up” by Andra Day. You can listen to that song here.
- This was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.
- Malorie Blackman was the first woman of colour to ever write for Doctor Who.
- The actor who played the background character Arthur (Morgan Deere) was in Doctor Who previously as Hawk in 1987’s “Delta & the Bannermen“.
- The dates on the tweets for this story are wrong. They say 2 Oct, but should be 21 Oct.

My fav from S11. #DoctorWho does the Rosa Parks story. 13 & fam land where this event happened, & due to a relatively weak bad guy here, causes the famed bus ride to now NOT happen, and 13 has to work to pic.twitter.com/K4Y1Ars2SO

set things right. The racism inherent in this story is not ignored, they face it head on a few times. 13 and fam end up on the bus for the fateful event. Ryan getting coffee for MLK is a riot. pic.twitter.com/jD9d6AHGvm

Tweet 3 was too long for embedded text. Here’s the whole thing:
One thing I wanted to add – on the bus scene, I thought the Tardis actors did their jobs amazingly well. The tension of the actual arrest scene was handled perfectly, especially Graham who showed outward discomfort over what was going on and had to be begged to stay on the bus. Well done.
