Ship in a Bottle

This Story: Season 6 Episode 12 (production code 238)
TNG Overall: Episode 138
Trek Overall: Story 233, Episodes 240
Airdate: 25 Jan 1993
Written by René Echevarria
Directed by Alexander Singer

Notes

  • The first episode of TNG to air after the launch of Deep Space Nine.
  • A sequel to the second season episode “Elementary, Dear Data“.
  • While Dr Pulaski is not named, her character is referenced by Moriarty given she appeared in the original.  It’s the final reference to Dr Pulaski in any fashion in the franchise (as of Feb 2025).
  • The reason it took so long to have a sequel is issues with the Doyle estate and the various “Holmes” universe characters.
  • One of the longest teasers for the show at 6.5 minutes.
  • The characters of Vic Fontaine (DS9) and “The Doctor” (VOY) are loosely based on Moriarty here.
  • The Moriarty character makes one final appearance in the franchise after this – the 2023 episode “The Bounty” from Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard”.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek TNG Ep 138 - Ship in a Bottle - 25 Jan 1993 1/2 A sequel to the S2 Sherlock Holmes ep. Real life issues with the Doyle estate stopped a sequel from happening sooner. It brings back Moriarity who has been "deactivated" since then. This time he's determined to break free

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek TNG Ep 138 - Ship in a Bottle - 25 Jan 1993 2/2 of the holodeck; he succeeds. The way out of this is a convoluted trail of fake outs & holodeck weirdness. Quite like the complicated angle / layers of it. Brings back Barkley who was always nice to see. Enjoyable & fun.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek TNG Ep 138 - Ship in a Bottle - 25 Jan 1993 3/2 The first TNG ep that aired after the launch of Deep Space Nine. I will of course do DS9, but I'm not going to mix concurrent series (TNG/DS9, DS9/VOY, DSC/LD). I'll hit everything but in the order the series are launched.
