The Last Outpost
The Last Outpost
This Story: Season 1 Episode 5 (production code 107)
TNG Overall: Episode 5
Trek Overall: Story 105, Episode 107
Airdate: 19 Oct 1987
Written by Richard Krzemien & Herbert Wright
Directed by Richard A. Colla
Notes
- The first (aired) episode in any incarnation of Star Trek for Armin Shimerman, although he is not playing his most well known character of Quark (despite being the first speaking Ferengi here).
- The first of two times that Picard says “merde” (French for “shit”) in an episode.
- The Ferengi ship is shown to have its “neck” able to expand and lengthen, something that is not shown again in the way it is here.
- The energy whips the Ferengi had were part of the redesign of the cahracters to make them not seem so silly. The whips were not seen again until the Deep Space Nine episode “Ferengi Love Songs”.

The first ever appearance of the Ferengi in Star Trek was unintentionally comical - which led to their reworking the next time they showed up. Contains the first appearance of Armin Shimerman, but not as pic.twitter.com/XeR9wu9Irf

Quark. This was better than I remembered, but the Ferengi themselves? I liked the way they were introduced (with a good mystery), but once on screen they were too comical for their own good. Was just fair. pic.twitter.com/opNyBwLi2p
