The Way to Eden

This Story: Season 3 Episode 20 (production code 3.20)
TOS Overall: Story 75, Episode 76
Trek Overall: Story 75, Episode 76
Airdate: 21 Feb 1969
Written by Arthur Heinemann & D.C. Fontana (as Michael Richards)
Directed by David Alexander

Notes

  • “The one with the space hippies”.
  • In the original version of this story by DC Fontana, the woman who was Chekov’s old flame was supposed to be involved with Kirk, and her name was Joanna.  That was significant as it was originally written to be McCoy’s daughter.
  • Lt Uhura is not in this episode, she’s replaced by Lt Palmer, in only her second appearance in the series – the other one was “The Doomsday Machine“.
  • This is the final appearance of a shuttlecraft in the series.
  • Chekov’s middle name is first mentioned here – Andreievich.
  • The ship that the hippies first arrive in was a recycled model of a Tholian ship from “The Tholian Web“.  This was changed for the remastered version.
  • Skip Homeier (the leader of the hippies – Sevrin) was in the episode “Patterns of Force” as Melakon, the primary bad guy.
  • Charles Napier (the #2 of the hippies – Adam, the singing one) was in the Deep Space Nine Episode “Little Green Men” as Lt. Denning.  He was Commander Gilmour in the Austin Powers movies.

The one with the space hippies! This is so bad, it's good. We get to see a few fun things - Spock jamming, Checkov's middle name, my fav line - "Gonna crack my knuckles, gonna jump for joy, got a clean bill of pic.twitter.com/O6PZSYU5YW

health from Dr McCoy!". This was originally supposed to have McCoy's daughter Joanna in here, but it got rewritten out. The ending is sad, but it's a rather funny ride to get to that end. #WeReachBrother pic.twitter.com/8qUqq2d9RC
