The Cage
This Story: Original Pilot (Season 1, Episode 0)

TOS Overall: Story 1, Episode 1
Airdate: 15 Oct 1988 (first TV airing)
Written by Gene Roddenberry
Directed by Robert Butler
Notes
- This was originally released to the public on 14 Oct 1986, but the version here wasn’t in full color, some segments (basically the bits that weren’t in The Menagerie) were in black and white.
- Finally aired on television for the first time on 15 Oct 1988, only this version was in full color.
- The only episode of Star Trek to have Jeffrey Hunter as Capt Pike – Hunter died in 1969, and was never able to return in later years (which I’m sure he would have).
- This pilot was later repurposed to form the backbone of the two parter “The Menagerie“.
- In dialogue in this episode, the use the phrase “The Menagerie” which is a fun forward looking thing.
- Several decades later, this episode received a proper sequel in the Star Trek Discovery episode “If Memory Serves“

series. When I was young I kind of ignored this since it wasn't Kirk, but I've grown to love it. I especially love that Discovery & Strange New Worlds picked this up and ran with it. Love smiling Spock & Number One. pic.twitter.com/pmAuFstvQP
